Our Vision & Mission
The mission of the Cheré Botha School is to develop the learners potential through a purposeful activity-based intervention programme and to support the learners with special education needs through parental guidance from the broader community.
The school’s slogan is: Together We Can.
This conveys a message of hope and encouragement through a partnership between the school and parents to ensure that each child receives maximum assistance so that they can develop to their full potential.
We are a testament to love, resilience, and the power of community.
OUR HISTORY
The Cheré Botha School, a testament to love, resilience, and the power of community, was established by Mike and Gloria Botha in 1981, named in memory of their daughter Cheré, born on September 17, 1976, with Down’s Syndrome. Cheré’s poignant journey, unfortunately cut short by leukemia on June 27, 1980, became the catalyst for the birth of a school that would redefine compassion and support.
We have traversed a remarkable path since our early beginnings, sparked by the birth of Cheré Botha, a little girl with Down’s Syndrome. Recognizing a pressing need in the community for infants and toddlers with special educational needs, Mike and Gloria took the initiative, forming a group to provide vital support to parents. From these humble origins, the school’s services flourished, growing from strength to strength.
Gloria’s pivotal journey to the University of Washington epitomized the dedication that would shape the Cheré Botha School. Seeking firsthand knowledge on establishing specialized services for parents and their children, she laid the foundation for a transformative initiative. The service evolved, drawing together individuals from diverse disciplines to assist parents, train staff, and nurture the development of learners.
Today, our commitment extends to parents and their children with special needs, who enroll in our early intervention program and seamlessly transition into the school program, receiving support until the age of eighteen. A significant milestone was reached in August 2008 when the school’s services expanded to embrace learners diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), showcasing our adaptability to the evolving landscape of special education.
While teaching at our beautiful new school, we reflect on the remarkable journey of the past thirty years. Our mantra, “Together we can,” has guided us through challenges, with parents, the community, and education stakeholders playing integral roles in our shared success.
To the founders, Mike and Gloria Botha, we express deep gratitude for their unwavering commitment, perseverance, and the high standards of education they set. As we move forward, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the Cheré Botha School’s legacy. Your support ensures that our learners receive an education of the highest standard, empowering them to reach their fullest potential. Together, we continue to shape a future filled with possibilities and promise.
